Free Open University course ‘Introduction to cyber security: stay safe online’

Open University Introduction to Cyber Security

Interesting and encouraging that the government has today announced the launch of a new free online learning platform, “The Skills Toolkit”,  and is including a course on cyber security from the Open University in association with the National Cyber Security Centre.

The Skills Toolkit is designed to “help people to build their skills during the coronavirus outbreak and beyond”.

Don’t panic: my 14 yr old daughter managed it 🙂

The OU says the Introduction to cyber security: stay safe online course does not assume any prior knowledge of computer security and can be enjoyed by anyone interested in improving the security of their digital information. It is estimated to take 24 hours of participation and, if you need any reassurance, my (then) fourteen-year-old daughter completed it without any difficulty last summer.

Understand online security and protect your digital life

The cyber security course is described as follows:

This free online course, Introduction to cyber security: stay safe online, will help you to understand online security and start to protect your digital life, whether at home or work. You will learn how to recognise the threats that could harm you online and the steps you can take to reduce the chances that they will happen to you.

With cyber security often in the news today, the course will also frame your online safety in the context of the wider world, introducing you to different types of malware, including viruses and trojans, as well as concepts such as network security, cryptography, identity theft and risk management.

This course has been developed by The Open University with support from the UK Government’s National Cyber Security Programme and can be accessed free of charge…

If you want to up your game, whether for your business, your personal life, or just because you would like to understand more about cyber security, this seems like a great opportunity.
